Centre Holidays
Mur-de-Bretagne:
At the centre of the 'Kreiz Breiz', Mur-de Bretagne is an
ideal place to enjoy the tranquillity of Central Brittany.
Mur de Bretagne, in the department of Cotes d'Armour(22) is
a small quiet town close to Lac Guerledan - the largest man-made
lake in Brittany.
From Mur de Bretagne it is possible to cycle or walk a different
route each day for a week. There are lots of possibilities
from lovely gentle rides to 'black run' off road tracks, and
for those days when you don't want to be active, the lakeside
beaches are within easy reach of the town centre.
Carhaix:
Carhaix Plouguer, in Finistere(29) lies on the crossroads
of several Roman roads and is one of the strongholds of Breton
traditions. On the edge of the Black Mountains a holiday based
here can provide some challenging rides if you want them,
but the Nantes à Brest canal provides some lovely meandering
rides and walks; which are invariably flat and where the tow
path is a well maintained track.
Cycle out to the Gorges du
Corong to see the famous cascades, enjoying the remains of
a roman aqueduct. Explore the old train tracks, now dedicated
cycle and walking routes that head off in easterly and southern
directions from Carhaix.
Pontivy:
Pontivy is a substantial town of about 14500 people
in the department of Morbihan(56), built in two parts - the
medieval town with its fortified 15th century château
overlooking the river and the regimented streets laid out
to Napoléon Bonaparte's plan made in 1802.
The town offers an interesting base for cycling and touring;
extensive but easy riding and walking along the banks of the
river Blavet, or the Nantes à Brest canal. Pontivy
has an interesting, lively centre which offers a wide range
of restaurants and shopping. During the summer months there
is an extensive itinerary of 'Arte en Chapelles', where many
of the ancient deconsecrated chapels of this region are open
and exhibit modern art, produced by local artists. The art
itineraries, by cycle, offer an interesting focus for exploring
this region.
Josselin:
Josselin is a very pretty town of about 3000 inhabitants
in the department of Morbihan(56). It is 45 miles west of
Rennes and 53 miles east of Lorient. The town is dominated
by its medieval castle built on the river Oust; which skirts
the town. This is a picturesque town with many small cafés
and restaurants lining the medieval streets.
A holiday based in the town offers cycling and walking possibilities
at all levels. We have developed several routes using the
Nantes à Brest canal for a relatively easy start to
each day but which take you deep into the heart of this relatively
unknown area. Another ride or extensive walk will take you
to Les Forges d'Asgard, a foundry built by the Duc de Rohan
to construct canons in 1756. Nowadays the house is used by
artisans creating jewelry and other artifacts which use similar
designs and fabrication methods to those used in the middle
ages.
Auray:
Auray is another attractive town in Morbihan(56). A small
and ancient town on the river Loc'h which has attractive old
quarters with narrow alleys and streets, lined with superbly
preserved 15th century houses. Auray is one of the eight Breton
Towns honoured with the title 'Ville d'art et d'histoire'.
Whilst Auray is a well visited town it is not a crowded place.
A holiday based in Auray offers very interesting cycling and
walking, discovering the many megalithic monuments in the
area, not least those at Carnac. Cycling and walking in the
area around Auray offers different opportunities for exploring
the estuary and inland to Sainte Anne d'Auray, an outstanding
Breton place of pilgrimage also the opportunity to visit Vannes
where you will find a popular tourist town and the opportunity
to take a boat trip in the Golfe du Morbihan.
